Abstract:
``A social portrait of today's prostitute{''} (by Anatoly Merenkov and Maria Nikitina) is based on a number of the sociological surveys among various groups of the prostitutes in Ekaterinburg (a city in the Urals). The data collected permit to single out basic social characteristics of this group in the late 1990's. A special role of the family is emphasised as a factor to shape the orientations for going into the sex business, as well as the roles of mass media, sexual and moral education as they are in Russia these days. Another survey - among the medical experts - gave room for discussing various eventual influences on the spread of this deplorable phenomenon in today's Russia social life.
