Abstract:
We present a review of the results on the effects of pulsed and dc magnetic fields on the isothermal martensitic transformation. At some temperatures and strengths of a magnetic field, pulsed magnetic fields can lead to the formation of martensite according to athermal kinetics in alloys that conventionally are characterized by isothermal kinetics. A dc magnetic field under proper conditions (temperature and field strength) in these alloys may cause both athermal and isothermal martensitic transformations. The TTT diagram of the development of an isothermal martensitic transformation under the effect of a dc magnetic field is shifted towards higher temperatures; this means that there occurs a contraction of the induction period preceding the formation of martensite, a substantial increase in the degree of transformation, and an expansion of the temperature interval of its development. Based on the results of an analysis of the effect of a dc magnetic field on the alloys with an isothermal kinetics of martensitic transformation, three-dimensional kinetic diagrams have been constructed that simultaneously reflect the effects on the martensitic transformation caused by the strength of the magnetic field, temperature, and duration of the isothermal soaking at corresponding temperatures. The isothermal martensitic transformation is suggested to be related to the bainitic transformation in carbon-free steels.
