Abstract:
Mechanism of formation of titanium hydroxide films from weakly acidic solutions of titanium trichloride was studied. Titanium hydroxide films are formed by a colloid-chemical mechanism including several steps. The oxidation of titanium(III) to titanium(IV) is the limiting step of the synthesis, which determines conditions of precipitation from homogeneous solution and precedes the titanium hydroxide formation. The colloid formation in the reaction solution was studied by ultrafiltration through nuclear filters. The step of a rapid growth of titanium hydroxide films on the surface of the support introduced is associated with oxidation of titanium(III) to titanium(IV) and formation of particles smaller than 0.07 mu m in size. The step of a slow growth of titanium hydroxide films corresponds to an increase of the size of particles in the reaction solution.
