Abstract:
The structure, hardness, and wear resistance (to abrasion and sliding friction) of steels U10 (1.00\% C) and U15 (1.53\% C) subjected to isothermal gamma --> alpha transformation at 330-650degreesC have been studied. A continuous increase in the hardness and wear resistance of these steels was found to occur with decreasing temperature of the pearlite decomposition to 420-500degreesC, which was connected not only with an increase in the dispersity of lamellar cementite but also with an increase in the solid-solution strengthening of ferrite and in the imperfection of the carbide phase in fine-lamellar pearlite. The upper bainite, formed at 330degreesC in the U10 steel and at 420degreesC in the U15 steel, as well as the ultrafine low-temperature pearlite, which constitutes the basis of the structure of the U15 steel after the austenite decomposition at 330degreesC, are inferior to fine-lamellar pearlite formed at 420-500degreesC in adhesion and abrasion wear resistance and in the susceptibility to deformation-induced strengthening upon friction. The abrasive wear resistances of the structures of isothermal decomposition of the U10 and U15 steels are compared with those obtained after quenching and tempering. Changes in the structural, strength, and tribological characteristics of the hypereutectoid steels subjected to pearlitic and bainitic transformations at 330 and 500degreesC were considered after subsequent annealing at 650degreesC for 5 min.
