Abstract:
Ultrafine (nanocrystalline) structures formed in a thin (several microns thick) surface layer in steels and-other iron alloys upon dry sliding friction of ``metal-metal{''} couples without noticeable friction heating of the contact zone were studied. The formation of ultrafine friction structures (UFFSs) is the most important final stage of the structural transformations induced by contact stresses in steels and alloys. The UFFS formation characterizes the transition to a rotational mechanism of plasticity in the subsurface layers of the contacting bodies, and the UFFSs themselves to a substantial extent determine the effects of some parameters of the initial structure (lattice type, concentration of interstitial alloying elements, the presence of fine carbide particles, and the magnetic state of austenite) and the oxidizing air environment on the strength characteristics (microhardness and shear resistance), friction coefficient, and wear rate of the UFFSs under consideration.
