Abstract:
The effect of the cooling rate, which is varied from 100 to 5 X 10(5) K/s, on the temperature of the onset of the beta --> alpha polymorphic transformation in zirconium has been studied. It is shown that zirconium, just as many other polymorphic materials (Ti, Fe), exhibits three kinetic transformation steps that differ in the temperature of the onset of transformation (800, 640, and 520degreesC, the structure (massive or ``basket{''} structure, dislocated martensite, and twinned martensite, respectively), and the microhardness. This steplike behavior can be explained using the Roitburd theory of kinetic steps in phase transformations.
