Abstract:
Experimental data on the effect of the cooling rate in a range of (0.1-500) x 10(3) K/s on the martensitic point, structure, and concentration of stacking faults in cobalt are presented and discussed. In the range of (0.1-5) x 10(3) K/s, the martensitic point of cobalt decreases. At cooling rates above 5 x 10(3) K/s, the martensitic point does not depend on the cooling rate and is equal to 330 +/- 15degreesC. The presence of isothermal and athermal steps of transformation is shown. At all cooling rates, the fee --> hcp transformation is not completed. The amount of the hexagonal phase and the degree of its imperfection depend in a complex way on the cooling rate. The results obtained were explained in the framework of the Roitburd theory.
