Abstract:
The temperature of the start of martensitic transformation, M-s, in iron alloys was considered as a function of alloying with elements belonging to the Groups V-VIII of three long periods of the periodic table on the basis of the results obtained and reported earlier. The total M-s shift caused by the formation of solid solution was subdivided into two components, magnetic and chemical (i.e., independent of ferromagnetism). To estimate the magnetic effect of alloying, the following derived formula was used (dM(s)/dx)(m) = E-m(T)/Theta(C)DeltaS(gamma --> alpha) dTheta(C)/dx, where E-m is the energy of the ferromagnetic coupling of spins in alpha-iron, Theta(C) is the Curie temperature, DeltaS(gamma --> alpha) is the entropy of the gamma --> alpha transformation, and x is the atomic fraction of the element in the alloy with iron. The magnetic and nonmagnetic effects of alloying elements on the M-s temperature were shown to regularly depend on its position in the periodic table.
