Abstract:
Electron microscopy was used to study the initial stages of the fragmentation of cementite lamellae in a eutectoid carbon steel U8 with the structure of lamellar pearlite upon additional annealing in the alpha state. The fragmentation of the cementite lamellae was experimentally observed to occur by the separation into blocks bounded by a single set of planes, along which carbon predominantly flow away and ferrite bridges are formed. It was shown that the processes of cementite coalescence are accompanied by the precipitation of fine carbides in the ferrite matrix. The planar defects revealed in globular carbides were suggested to be of the same crystallographic type as that characteristic of cementite of fresh lamellar pearlite.
