Abstract:
Two continuous metallic spheres about 60 mm each were made of the Fe-31.8 wt \% Ni-0.03 wt \% C (N32) alloy. After a preliminary heat treatment, one of the balls contained only face-centered cubic (fcc) austenitic phase. The material of the second ball contained 60 vol \% fcc phase and 40 vol \% martensitic bcc phase in the form of relatively coarse (20-30 mum) lenticular crystals. Both spheres were subjected to the action of spherical and quasi-spherical shock waves of various intensity. After loading, the diameters of both spheres increased and in the center of each ball a closed cavity was formed. Optical metallography and transmission electron microscopy of the material of shocked balls that retained their integrity revealed numerous deformation-induced defects and signs of various phase transformations. The character and location of the defects of deformation origin as well as the character of phase transformations were juxtaposed with the conditions of the dynamic explosive loading and with the relative distance from the center of each ball.
