Abstract:
The CaY2-x Ln (x) Ge3O10 (Ln = Eu or Tb) phosphors have been synthesized via an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid complexing process. Simultaneous thermal analysis has been used to study thermal decomposition of the precursor. X-ray powder diffraction measurements indicate that the well crystallized single-phase solid solutions (S.G. P2(1)/c, Z = 4) can be obtained at temperatures above 1,000 A degrees C. According to scanning electron microscopy data, the final products consist of dense particles with the average size of < 1 mu m. The emission spectra of the Eu3+-doped samples contain several intense peaks corresponding to the characteristic transitions from the excited D-5(0) level to the F-7 (J) (J = 0-4) levels. For Tb3+-doped germanates, the D-5(3) -> F-7 (J) and D-5(4) -> F-7 (J) (J = 3-6) transitions have been observed. The intensity ratio between emissions from D-5(3) and D-5(4) levels varies significantly with the activator content due to cross relaxation. The highest intensity of luminescence has been observed for the compounds annealed at 1,100 A degrees C.
