Abstract:
The crystal structures of cyclic compounds, strontium tetrametavanadates A(2)Sr(VO3)(4), where A = Na, K, Rb, or Cs, were determined from X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction data by the Rietveld method using the GSAS program package. All compounds crystallize in tetragonal system, space group P4/nbm (Z = 2) for Na, K, and Rb and P4/mmm (Z = 1) for Cs; unit cell parameters a = 10.6349(4), 10.94106(6), 11.08889(8), and 7.9183(3) Angstrom and c = 4.96205(4), 5.31600(4), 5.46682(8), and 5.5778(3) Angstrom, respectively. The transition from sodium to cesium via potassium and rubidium is accompanied by a change in the oxygen environment around both the alkali element (from an octahedron to a hexagonal prism) and strontium (from a square antiprism to a square prism) caused by a high flexibility of the V4O12 tetracycles.
