Abstract:
The structure of the solid lithium-conducting electrolyte Li2ZrO3 was comprehensively studied by X-ray and neutron diffraction at temperatures from 25 to 550 degreesC. An increase in temperature leads to the anisotropic expansion of the lattice, caused by a change of interatomic distances in the monoclinic Structure Of Li2ZrO3. The local oxygen environment of the Li(l) atom undergoes the strongest distortion, and the environments of the Li(2) and Zr positions are distorted to a lesser extent. This process is accompanied by a considerable change in the Li(1) and Li(2) site occupancies. Anisotropy of thermal expansion coefficients results in a sharp chance in the electrical properties of the electrolyte: at 430 degreesC, its electrical conductivity increases jump-wise and the activation energy decreases (from 98.4 to 13.8 kJ/mol), which may be associated with a change of the mass transfer mechanism. This change in properties can be treated as the second-order phase transition.
