Abstract:
In the La-Sr-Cu-Ni-O system, a new mixed cuprate of variable composition La(4)Sr(4)Cu(8-x)Ni(x)O(18) (+ delta) (1 <= x <= 2.0) with a tetragonal anion-deficient perovskite structure was prepared by calcining the appropriate oxides at 970 degrees C in air and then at 950 degrees C in a helium atmosphere. The Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure of the cuprate gave space group P (4) over bar b2. The formation of this compound is due to the stabilizing effect of nickel; nickel, being highly inclined to octahedral coordination, is responsible for the atypical structure of this phase. The thermal properties of the cuprate in air are studied from 20 to 1000 degrees C.
