Abstract:

``Social comparison as a daily phenomenon and as a sociological issue{''} presents social comparison as a daily-life phenomenon, as element of routine and theoretical thinking, and as an issue for sociological analysis and academic epistemological procedure. Social comparison is influential in its impact on the social moods and social health. It underlies social nostalgia and is closely tied to social memory. The above phenomenon is described on the basis of sociological classic works (i.a., E. Durkheim), as well as recent students (R. Benedict, L. Festinger, N. Smelser a.o.). Sociological studies of comparison might arguably be effected at different levels - theoretical, methodical, substantial etc. Its basic characteristics are enumerated in conclusion.
