Abstract:
A comparitive analysis is performed on condensed metallic states (melt, glass, and crystal) known previously, as characterized by composition, atomic structure, and features of electronic structure in connection with the discovery of a new unique state; viz. the quasicrystalline state. In the investigation of these materials having what is considered as forbidden symmetry, let us visualize anew the correspondence between long and short-range disorders, as well as reveal the essence of periodicity and its role in forming long range order. It was established by analysis that changes in the structure-sensitive properties of melts, glasses, and quasicrystals upon varying the composition, reversible and irreversible changes in state during heat treatment, application of electromagnetic fields, high pressures and discharging are mainly determined by the degree of homogeneity or heterogeneity of their micorstructure; i.e. by the existence of short range order. In connection with this, the essential concepts and structural models of melts and glasses, as well as quasicrystalline phases that are close to them are discussed in this article. In a number of typical examples, it is demonstrated that progress made in understanding the structure of these states has been possible due to: a) a combination of computer simulation with statistical methods of the geometry of polyhedra; and b) topological models of a projection form of higher (than 3) dimensions with a different degree of curvature.
