Abstract:
A new electrode based on a complex of chromium ions with diphenylcarbazide was suggested for determining Cr(VI). In this electrode, methylbutyl ketone was used as an organic extractant for the complex. The electrode response was linear within the concentration range from 1 x 10(-1) to 1 x 10(-6) M. In the pH range from 3.9 to 5.3, the slope of the response S was virtually constant (on average, 18 mV). Before being put into operation, the electrode should be conditioned in a 1 x 10(-4) M K2Cr2O7 solution for 15 min. After measurements, it should be immersed in the same solution for 30 min. The lifetime of the electrode without changing the membrane was no shorter than 60 days. The response time was 4 s both with and without stirring. The potential drift was no higher than +/- 1 mV per day; in this case, the detection limit remained constant. The electrode exhibited adequate selectivity for commonly encountered ions such as Cl-, CO32-, NO3-, and SO42. The electrode developed can be recommended for the monitoring of Cr(VI) in industrial wastewater in both sampling and automatic modes.
