Abstract:
The dynamic behavior of the current sheet in a pulsed coaxial plasma accelerator is studied. The current distribution in the accelerator channel is found by magnetic probes; the plasma density distribution is determined under various operating conditions by a laser interferometer at 10. 6 mu and by a beam of atomic hydrogen. The results found in the beam measurements and by interferometry agree. The results are used to calculate the directed velocity of the electrons in the discharge. It is shown that in fast operation of the accelerator the directed velocity is much higher than the critical value for the onset of current-driven instabilities.
