Abstract:
Anomalous (irreversible in temperature) thermal expansion of highly anisotropic (Ising) magnets at helium temperatures has been observed. The anomaly is associated with a metastable state in the magnetic subsystem, which sets in as a result of a jump in the thermal conductivity of liquid helium as it goes from the superfluid to normal state. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
