Abstract:
The mechanism of the behavior of aluminum in a molten eutectic mixture of lithium and potassium chlorides was investigated at 670-800°K with the help of a high-temperature microscope. From the results it was determined that aluminum reacts with the hydrogen chloride present in the melt, lithium hydroxides, as well as iron, magnesium, silicon, etc. impurity ions. The reaction occurs at the primary defects of the oxide film.
