Abstract:
The process kinetics on a graphite anode in oxyhalide melts based on the CsCl-KCl-NaCl eutectic with TeO2 and NaF additives is investigated at 600A degrees C. Dependences of limiting recharge currents of tellurium atoms and residual discharge currents of oxygen-containing ions on the TeO2 and NaF contents are investigated. Exceeding these currents leads to chlorine liberation in oxychloride melts and liberation of freons in chloride-fluoride melts. The dissolution mechanism of TeO2 in chloride and chloride-fluoride melts through the formation and subsequent dissociation of tellurium oxychloride with the formation of O2-, TeCl (6) (2-) , and {[}TeO2Cl](-) ions is proposed. The presence of these ions in the electrolyte is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and explains high discharge rates of oxygen-containing ions at the anode.
