Abstract:
A theoretical model describing concentration phase separation of ionic ferrofluids (IFFs) under the effect of the excess electrolyte was constructed. The structure of the electrical double layers was determined in terms of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation at the adsorption mechanism of the surface charge formation. Polydispersity of the ferrofluid was taken into account by a two-fraction approximation. Phase diagrams of a bidisperse ionic ferrofluid were constructed, and parameters of coexisting phases were determined based on the analysis of the conditions of thermodynamic stability.
