International Children’s Book Day is celebrated annually on 2nd of April. It is a birthday of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen who had taken the world by children’s fairy tales. His works have been translated into 150 languages, several generations of people have grown up reading them. In 1956 Hans Christian Andersen’s award was established.

The genre of children’s literature began to develop relatively recently, since until the middle of the 17th century children read the same books as their parents. In the 18th century such famous today works as «Robinson Crusoe» by Daniel Dafoe, «Gulliver’s Travels» by Jonathan Swift became available for children’s reading. Collections of Oriental fairy-tales were popular. In the 19th century specially written for children works appeared, in particular – fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Andersen. The development of printing and literacy among different segments of population in the mid-19th century increased the demand for children’s literature. The release of the fairy tale «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland» by Lewis Carroll in 1865 marked the birth of a fantasy genre in children’s literature.

Rapid development of children’s literature in Russia began in the 19th century. Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky became the first to translate Grimm’s Fairy Tales into Russian and began writing tales inspiring thus Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin.

Children’s fantasy books are in the focus of the modern young reader. Full of fantastic and fabulous elements, these works captivate by their bright and dynamic plot.
