The Department of Rare Books is home to a unique collection of printed books from the 18th–19th centuries consisting of 45,000 items. These are historical works, fiction, philosophical works, works on the history and theory of law, encyclopedias, works on mathematics and natural science books.

The collection of the library of the Imperial Alexander Lyceum occupies a special place. It was one of the privileged educational institutions of pre-revolutionary Russia. The most famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin also studied there. Among the Lyceum graduates there were many famous diplomats, statesmen, writers, and poets. Most of the subjects of that time were studied in French, so books in this language dominated in the Lyceum library, but there are also many books in Russian and German. In total, the collection has about 16,000 items.

The department specialists are actively engaged in working with this collection. Since 2014, series of monographs The Library of the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo (Alexander) Lyceum in Yekaterinburg have been compiled and published. All the volumes are freely available by link.

The department’s collection contains Western European books from the 17th–19th centuries kept by different owners, such as individuals, institutions that were abolished after the revolution of 1917, and major libraries of Russia that gave books for exchange.

There are also books, mostly in English, handed over to the Soviet people during World War II by residents of the Allies – the United Kingdom and the USA. These books occupy a special place in the collection and contain stickers “To the heroic people of the Soviet Union”, “American society for Russian Relief”, etc.

The collection is available to everyone for in-library reading in the Department of Rare Books. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, on Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.

Besides, the department has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of book and the history of the Alexander Lyceum. You can sign up for a tour by calling the department: +7 (343) 389-94-48.
