Ancient artifacts and technologies of the future, classical and modern arts – museums represent the concentration of the history of civilization, its development and cultural achievements. In 1977, the International Museum Day was established at a sitting of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The main holiday of the museum community around the world is traditionally held on May 18. Last year, this event was celebrated by 37,000 museums in 158 countries.

For the last 30 years, every International Museum Day has its own theme. The global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic has also affected museums. Therefore, last year the holiday was held under the slogan “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”. In 2022, the theme of the event will be “The Power of Museums”.

The Night of Museums is the most famous tradition of the holiday. This is a cultural and educational event, during which you can view museum expositions at night, and some of them until the morning. This action takes place on the weekend following the International Museum Day. This year it will take place on the night of May 21-22.

Ural Federal University has several museums and permanent exhibitions, many of them take part in the celebration. Every year, museum staff and students of various areas prepare an extensive cultural program as part of the Night of Museums: workshops, performances, quests, film screenings, and music concerts.
