The Urals is a real treasure for adventure lovers. At any time of year, recreation in this region has its charms. In winter it’s alpine skiing, swimming in hot springs, winter fishing. In the summer you can try rafting down fast rivers, hike in the green Ural Mountains, and swim in picturesque lakes. Besides its natural wealth, the Urals is full of historic and cultural monuments and landmarks.
The library has prepared for you a series of materials related to different parts of the Urals. To open this series, we present a story about the most interesting places of Sverdlovsk oblast.
Sverdlovsk oblast is located in the middle part of the Ural Mountains, at the junction of Europe and Asia. The population of the region is categorized by its ethnic and cultural diversity. Here you can find both unique museum-cities and nature monuments, among which we can distinguish the following sites:
- Nature Park «Bazhovskiye Mesta» («Bazhov’s Places») is a reserve full of natural and man-made landmarks the area of which is 4000 hectares. The park is located in the Sysert region – the ironmaking cradle of the Urals.
- «Chertovo Gorodishche» («Devil’s Settlement») is an amazing rock mass 345 meters high, in a few kilometers from Yekaterinburg.
- Open-Air Museum-Reserve of Wooden Architecture is located in the village of Nizhnyaya Sinyachikha. Samples of ancient stone and wooden architecture are gathered on a spacious glade. The reserve was founded in 1978.
- The Ural Mars is a refractory clay quarry near the town of Bogdanovich. The impressive quarry is called the Ural Mars for its scarlet slopes The quarry is flooded with waters of rare red color.
- Lake Tavatui is located in the Nevyansk district. According to scientists, its age is at least 10000 years. The Komi-Permian name of the lake is translated as «this water way».
In the library collection of the Ural Federal University library you can find books about history of the region, its touristic landmarks as well as some literary fiction taking place in Sverdlovsk oblast.
