Every year the International Day of Charity is celebrated on the 5th of September.
The date of the celebration commemorates the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress”. Her selfless missionary contributed greatly into expansion of charity and struggle against poverty on the Earth.
Each of us is able to support this activity in many ways. Not only the financial and material donations, but blood donations, daily help to children, elderly people and people in need – all of that manifest you in your good deeds. Due to the development of charity sphere around the world there is a growing interest and need in studying it.
If you are not alien to the ideas of volunteering, we recommend you to read a very inspiring book from our collection – Allahyari R. A. Visions of Charity. Volunteer Workers and Moral Community. It will be interesting for anyone who is seeking for humanism and mercy. The book provides insight into the charity organizations functioning and their potential. There is a considerable number of books on the history, theory and practice of charity in the Library collection, and some of them you can borrow. You can check the books’ availability on the circulation desks and in the reading rooms in the Library Electronic Catalogue.
