Some days ago, on November 10, World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated. This annual event highlights the significant role of science in modern society.

Moreover, the current year 2022 is an International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.

Basic sciences, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, are vital for advances in medicine, industry, power engineering, environmental sciences, communication, culture, and in many other spheres. Due to the achievements in these sciences we can forecast, reduce or even prevent the impact of such disasters as ozone depletion, climate change, species extinction, etc.

Answering the challenges of modern times, Ural Federal University is involved into numerous international scientific projects. To promote and facilitate academic research, the University acquires a great number of international scientific databases.

The databases can be classified into interdisciplinary, one-subject, full-text, abstract, bibliographic, and bibliometric ones. Their content may include journal articles, books, dissertations, standards, patents, conference proceedings, etc. The most famous DB are Scopus, ScienceDirect, IEEE, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, Sage Journals, ACM Digital Library, American Institute of Physics, American Chemical Society, JStor, and many others. All of them are listed in a table uploaded on the Library website (the tab “UrFU Electronic Resources”).

Everyone engaged in research should carefully study the table because it supplies not only information on the DB topic and content, but also on the mode of access and the end of the access duration. Databases are interchangeable, some of them may leave UrFU or national subscription for different reasons (like Web of Science and Reaxys), while new ones replace them. For example, recently the DB list was expanded by Academic Reference (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), SAE International. SAE eBooks, Bentham Science Publishers. Books and journals, and some others.

To our great regret, the aggregator of EZproxy distant authentication system has terminated access for UrFU. Today the world databases are available only within UrFU corporate network. As regards the leading Russian databases, such as eLibrary.ru and East View, they are still in distant access too.

All questions concerning access and search in the databases you can address to the Library Information Centres, Department of Bibliography and Information Services and “Accessible Science” («Доступная наука») VKontakte group.
