The Department of Rare Books Presents a New Exhibition
____

The exhibition «Japan and China. A Look from the Russian Empire» is dedicated to the Russian contacts with eastern neighbours in 18th-the beginning of 20th centuries. A lot of interesting works are on display, among them:

- еhe first book about Japan published in the Russian language – «Описание о Японе» (Санкт-Петербург, 1734) (“The Description of Japan”, St. Petersburg, 1734);
- Chinese political-philosophical works created during the reign of Catherine the Great translated into Russian by Alexey Leontyevich Leontyev (one of the first Russian specialists in the Chinese and Manchurian languages). It was he who introduced the domestic reader to the basic concepts of Chinese philosophy;
- the work by captain Yuri Fyodorovich Lisyansky «Путешествие вокруг света в 1803, 1804, 1805 и 1806 годах» (Санкт-Петербург, 1812) («A Journey around the World in 1803, 1804, 1805 and 1806». St. Petersburg, 1812). It describes the first circumnavigation of Russian sailors, during which the first attempt to establish official diplomatic connections between Russia and Japan took place;
- works of monk Iakinf (in secular life Nikita Yakovlevich Bichurin) – the founder of Russian sinology whose life could have become the plot of an adventurous novel.

The exhibition will last until the end of the academic year. There are excursions for the Library visitors. To book an excursion you can call the Department of rare books (343) 389–94–48 or email it: ork@urfu.ru. Working hours of the department: Monday-Friday 9 am - 5 pm, Saturday 9 am - 4 pm.
