On December 1 the All-Russia Hockey Day is celebrated. It was founded by the initiative of Vladislav Tretiak, our famous goaltender and coach. The festivities include honouring legendary veterans, organizing meetings and show games for youth sports schools with the stars of Kontinental Hockey League, and, certainly, playing hockey! Reference: the word “Hockey” is of unknown origin. It most likely comes from the French word hoquet, which is a curved shepherd’s hook. The ball and stick field game was called ‘hoque’. Another supposition derives from the known use of cork bungs (stoppers), in place of wooden balls to play the game. The stoppers came from barrels containing "hock" ale, also called "hocky". The first evidence of outdoor stick-and-ball games played on frozen rivers goes back to the 10th-11th centuries. Russian chronicles witness to the ice fun where several men played a ball (vegetable, as a rule) with curved sticks. Peter I is known to be a ball hockey fan. At that time iron skates were first delivered from Holland. In 1954 the Soviet ice hockey team made its debut at the World Championships and shocking all fans and specialists won gold medals. Currently, the Russia national team (formerly the USSR) also called the “Red Machine” is the record holder for World Championship wins ¬ 27 gold medals. It also has won the Olympic Games on nine occasions. And, doubtlessly, the Super Series, or Series of the Century, or Canada-USSR Series held in 1972 should be highlighted. These games opened many stars (Yakushev, Kharlamov, Tretiak) to the whole hockey world. Russian President Vladimir Putin is fond of hockey and often takes part and scores goals in all-stars events. Looking ahead, December 22 is considered the birthday of Russian ice hockey, so the “frozen show” must go on. UrFU Library congratulates everyone involved into this wonderful game (players, coaches, doctors, fans) and offers a compilation of the books devoted to the game and famous players (in Russian and foreign languages) from the Library collection and Electronic Library Systems posted in Ural Federal University Library VKontakte group. |
