The Nobel Prize in Literature
____

In their works Nobel prize laureates in literature touch upon themes of self-identification, freedom of choice of the political position and religion, role and status of women in society and other current problems of the modern world. But how many of them do we know?

In 2006 Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk received his prize as a man «who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures». Pamuk depicts the conflict of the West and the East in Turkey in his famous novels «Snow» and «The White Castle».

This English author was awarded with the most prestigious prize in the world in 2007 as "that epicist of the female experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny". In her works Doris Lessing turns to women’s social experiences and their attitude towards children. Her most famous works include novels like «The grass is singing», «The golden notebook» and «The fifth child».

In 2017 the Nobel Prize was given to a Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro. He was called the one "who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world". In his books like «The buried giant», «Never let me go», «The remains of the day» Ishiguro opens the world of human feelings and emotions.

The Polish writer and poet Olga Tokarczuk should be also noted. She was presented her award in 2018 "for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents overcoming of boundaries as a form of life". Novels «Podróż ludzi Księgi» («Journey of the People of the Book»), «Bieguni» («Flights»), «Prowadź swój pług przez kości umarłych» («Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead») are considered the most successful among her works. In her life Tokarczuk follows two strict rules – «don’t make any decisions before your first cup of the morning coffee» and «don’t predict what are you writing – a short story or a novel, just write».

Everyone who wants to get acquainted with the mentioned and other books both in Russian and original languages can check their availability in the electronic library catalogue. The full list of writers can be found in the publication on VKontakte public page.
