The Department of Rare Books Presents a New Exhibition

The Department of Rare Books has opened a new exhibition devoted to the study of one of the kinds of provenance marks, namely an ex-libris (from Latin ex lībrīs “out of the books of, from the books of”). Since the invention of printing ex-libris have been the invariable companions of books. The exposition gives a description and analysis of the bookplates and of the place they occupy in the sphere of culture. The exhibition is comprised of a varied range of books with ex-libris of influential historic figures (for example, representatives of the House of Romanov) as well as regional bookplates devoted to a particular city or place. There are some unique ex-libris among the items on display, for example, a space exploration ex-libris. The Department’s own ex-libris made in 1977 is also presented at the exhibition. The exposition is on show till the end of the academic year. The working hours of the department are as follows: Mon–Fri 9 am till 5 pm Sat 9 am till 4 pm Text by: A.V. Komarova
