Many major cities have a pedestrian street. In Yekaterinburg that street is Weiner Street – one of the oldest ones in the city. From here many tourists begin their acquaintance with the city.

It is better to start a walk along the "Ural Arbat", as the townspeople call it, from the main square of Yekaterinburg, located in the city center – 1905 Square. Before the revolutionary events of the beginning of the XX century it was called differently – Church street. The Epiphany Cathedral and Gostiny Dvor (market square) in the center used to gather people around. City holidays, prayer services and processions were held here, as well as rallies (since the 20th century). Nowadays there is a monument of the Soviet statesman Vladimir Lenin. During the New Year’s holidays an ice town with a Christmas tree is built there. The shopping malls were moved to the "Passage" and to Weiner Street.

For an inexperienced tourist, "Arbat" can seem as an original old place, but there are almost no houses even of the 19th century. The street is full of new buildings built both in the architectural styles of the past centuries and modern monuments and sculptures.

History lovers can appreciate the monument to Yefim Artamonov who was the creator of the scooter bike. The houses of the philistine Lazarev, merchant Telegin (the 19th century) and one of the most beautiful buildings – the Blinov mansion (the early 20th century) are rare architectural monuments. Michael Jackson’s fans sponsored the first and only Russian monument to the musician. The statue of Gena Bukin, the hero of the Russian TV series "Happy Together" ("Schastlivy Vmeste") is located next to it.

You can get acquainted with the history of the city in the Ural Federal University Library: for example, take a look at the guide "Streets and Squares of Old Yekaterinburg". The book contains "portraits" of all of the streets and squares that existed in old Yekaterinburg in the dynamics of their development from birth to the beginning of the 20th century. You can check the availability of the book on the circulation desks and in the reading rooms in the electronic catalog.

We recommend visiting the "Happiness Button" on the wall of the Uspensky trade center. People usually touch or rub some place on the monument for their personal good luck, but here you press the button and a random person in the world becomes happier.
