In 2024, one of the world's most famous art museums, the State Hermitage Museum, celebrates its 260th anniversary.
Originating as a private art collection, the Hermitage outgrew its name (from Fr. 'ermitage'—a place of seclusion, hermitage) in 1852 under Emperor Nicholas I, who opened it to the public in the specially built new Hermitage building. It was the first public art museum building in the Russian Empire. Today, the Hermitage comprises a vast complex of twelve buildings, has branches in other cities (including in Yekaterinburg—'Hermitage-Ural'), and ranks among the most visited art museums globally.
The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first covers the history of the Hermitage from pre-revolutionary guides through the picture gallery, compiled by the renowned artist Alexandre Benoîs, to works dedicated to revolutionary and wartime periods. Of particular note is the book Save and save. Evacuation of the State Hermitage in the Urals in documents, memories, photos and drawings. This rare edition was printed in a limited run of only 1,500 copies for the 80th anniversary of the Hermitage collection's evacuation from Leningrad to Sverdlovsk and the opening of 'Hermitage-Ural.
The second part of the exhibition focuses on the scientific activities of the Hermitage, featuring books published by the museum's publishing house, including:
— the beautifully illustrated edition Book Kunstkammer in the Hermitage—an illustrated catalog accompanying the exhibition on non-traditional books, book and art objects — the catalog Palaces, Ruins, and Prisons, which examines the early works of the outstanding Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi against the backdrop of the artistic life of 18th-century Rome and Venice, tracing his influence on Italian architectural graphics of the century — another issue of the collection Jewelry Art and Material Culture dedicated to various aspects of the study of jewelry art The rich collection of the Hermitage allows exploration of numerous areas of history and art. We invite you to visit the exhibition and explore the showcased books in the reading room of the Department of Rare Books at the Ural Federal University Library (4 Turgeneva Street, Room 356) from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.
