In 2023 the world largest publishing house Elsevier took the decision to suspend access for the Russian Federation. It concerned all its products, including Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Reaxys.

But still, having publications in Scopus and Web of Science, remains an obligatory requirement for defending a dissertation. And still, it is considered the main source of scholarly information and bibliometric indicators. Floods of researchers come to us and ask: “What can we do?”

First of all, Scopus is not the only source of scientific data. There are many databases available in UrFU containing full-text academic journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Sciences. However, it is the topic of a separate post. Wait for it!

As regards Scopus, we are going to tell you, anyway, a few tips about searching some information there.

Today we can see only the Scopus Preview page. We have no right to enter the system, even having personal account there. We can not make a query, read an article or download it. However, there are some free tabs there. Firstly, we can look through and download the list of sources indexed in Scopus with journal ranking. We can arrange the list by alphabet, CiteScore, citing or percentile. Then we can select a journal and view its profile details, its indicators. But full texts of the articles are not accessible.

Secondly, there is Author Search that allows checking authors profiles (either yourself or another author’s). Here you can see the author’s Scopus ID, the number of papers, H-index. Note, that Scopus Preview users can only see the titles of the last 10 works without reading full texts, while most other features are disabled.

And definitely, we can use the SCImago Journal & Country Rank. It is a publicly available portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus. These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific journals that can be compared or analyzed separately. Country rankings may also be compared or analyzed separately. Journals can be grouped by subject area or subject category or by country. Thus, you can estimate and choose a journal for your publication.

And finally, some of UrFU international master students and postgraduates can use Scopus accounts made in their native countries.

Please, remember, that these are only tricks of extracting some information from Scopus, and this information can change any time!
