Library continues to introduce you to interesting books dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Sverdlovsk oblast. We asked the students being in March in translation practice in the Library to tell about their favourite places in Sverdlovsk oblast and recommend books about these places. Today we want to present you the album “The Sverdlovsk Region” reviewed by 2nd-year student of Linguistics Badanjki Douja. The Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land in Yekaterinburg is perhaps the most famous church in Russia among those built in the Middle Urals. It was built on the site of the Ipatiev House destroyed in 1977, in which the family of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II was shot on the night of July 16-17, 1918. The history of one of the largest and most significant churches in Yekaterinburg began a long time ago. The church was built on the place where the house of engineer Ipatiev stood until the mid-seventies, chosen in 1918 as the last place of detention of the former Emperor Nicholas II and his family. It was here that the royal family celebrated their last Easter, it was here that the wife and children congratulated Nicholas II on his 50th birthday, it was here, in the basement of the Ipatiev House, on the night of July 16-17, 1918, their earthly journey ended. The family of the last Russian emperor was shot in Yekaterinburg by decision of the Presidium of the Bolshevik Ural Soviet, but this decision was at least coordinated with the central leadership of the Bolshevik Party, and perhaps even initiated directly by Lenin and Sverdlov. The murder of the Royal Family became a bloody symbol of the Great Russian Revolution and the fratricidal Civil War. The Church on Blood is an indispensable landmark of city excursions and pilgrimage tours, especially in July, when on the anniversary of the tragedy, many pilgrims flock here to pray, and then, on the night of July 16-17, to go through the religious procession from the Church on Blood to the Monastery of the Holy Imperial Passion-Bearers in Ganina Yama. And in winter, on Christmas Day, the Bethlehem Star Ice Sculpture Festival is held annually near the church. I’d like to recommend the album “The Sverdlovsk Region” to everyone interested in the history of Yekaterinburg. It is a convincing and thoroughly researched report on the city of Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), in which industrial history and infrastructure development are masterfully intertwined. Each chapter is introduced by the remarks of Alexander Misharin, the region Governor at the time of the book publishing. His attention to details deserves praise. He conducts an in-depth analysis of the strategic significance of Sverdlovsk. The book deals with many industrial giants inextricably linked with the Sverdlovsk region – the Russian center of mechanical engineering, energy and transport as well as with miners and metallurgy. The book also focuses on recreational and historical places and sports widespread in the region. The development of science and its perspectives are highlighted. The book also presents a detailed guide with photos over the region’s most attractive landmarks. It is a fascinating and informative publication that will appeal to lovers of history, culture and anyone interested in the secrets and treasures of the charming city of Yekaterinburg located in the heart of Russia.
