The Library continues to acquaint you with the brands and symbols of the Sverdlovsk region that create its unique image for tourists and visitors. Today we will tell you about the world's oldest monumental sculpture made of wood, presented in one of the museums of Yekaterinburg.

The Great Shigirsky idol is a Ural treasure, the value of which mankind has not yet fully realized. It is a wooden figure covered with images of hands and faces and carved geometric ornamentation. A new study by scientists has shown that this wooden sculpture is much older than previously thought. It is more than 12,000 years old. The Mesolithic artefact significantly exceeds the age of the Egyptian pyramids.

The idol was found in early 1890 in the Shigirsky peat bog, at a depth of 4 metres, just 80 kilometres from Ekaterinburg (near the town of Kirovgrad). The discovery of the unique artefact was helped by the “gold rush” that hit the Middle Urals in the middle of the 19th century.

During Soviet times, the idol was kept in the vaults of the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum. The artefact was shown to museum visitors only in 2003, when the Shigirskaya Pantry exposition was opened. A special showcase was even ordered for the unique exhibit. Now the Shigirsky idol is exhibited for visitors of the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore in Yekaterinburg at 69 Lenina Street, Building 10.

In the collection of the UrFU Library you will find publications about different collections of the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore. And for those who are interested in the topic of primitive and historical archaeology of the Urals, we recommend to study the editions of the XIX century and the first half of the XX century, available in Rare Books Department (4 Turgeneva Street, Room 356).
