The UrFU library continues to acquaint you with the brands and symbols of the Sverdlovsk region that create its unique image for tourists and visitors. Today we will tell you about the most popular semi-precious stone mined in the region. The Urals is especially famous for its rocks, which produce precious, semi-precious and ornamental stones (emerald, amethyst, aquamarine, jasper, rhodonite, malachite, etc.). The depths of the mountains contain more than two hundred different minerals: bright as fire, transparent and sparkling like water... The unique stones mined here are considered to be among the most valuable mineral riches of Russia. Malachite is best known among the semi-precious stones of the Sverdlovsk region. The fame of this bright green stone began in 1810 in connection with the discovery of the Urals malachite mines (Mednorudyansky in Nizhny Tagil, and then Gumeshevsky in Polevskoy), which were unrivalled in terms of both the scale of reserves and the beauty of this mineral. Malachite was branded by the storyteller Pavel Petrovich Bazhov. Thanks to his works based on folk legends and fairy tales, malachite became firmly associated with the Ural masters. The writer created a whole collection of stories called "Malachite Box", in which he praised the precious stone of the Ural Mountains: «Malachite is a stone of unprecedented joy and wide power, in it the joy of the earth is gathered». Tales from this collection have been translated into many languages of the world. In the Library collection you will find not only the writer's fairy tales, but also a lot of interesting literature about his life and creative path. You can check the availability of books on circulation desks and in the reading rooms with the help of Library Catalogue. Author: Olga Mikhalitsyna
