The Library continues to introduce you to the brands and symbols of the Sverdlovsk region that create its unique image for tourists and visitors. Today we will tell you about a Russian heavy motorbike originating from the Urals, which is exported to many countries of the world.

In the mid-1930s, the Soviet Union began developing motorbikes for military purposes. The German model BMW R-71 was taken as a basis. In August 1941, serial production of M-72 motorbikes was launched at the Moscow Motorcycle Plant. But during World War II, the plant was evacuated to the Urals in the town of Irbit. There they started to produce the Ural M-72. During the war years, almost 10 thousand motorbikes were sent to the front.

Years later, the Irbit Motorcycle Plant started producing civilian motorbikes. The first road-type motorbike was the Ural M-52. This model was very much loved by countryside residents, mushroom pickers, hunters and fishermen. For its good cross-country capability, it was called “the king of off-road”.

The “Ural” motorcycles that are produced today are equipped with new electronics, units and assemblies. Currently, the company produces about 1000 motorbikes a year, 90% of which are sold outside Russia. Russian Ural bikes are in the garages of King Abdullah II of Jordan and Hollywood stars Evan McGregor and Brad Pitt.

In 2024, the motorbike factory in Irbit received an order from official government agencies for 20 Ural motorbikes with sidecar, to be presented to the participants of the “Supporting Region” quiz, timed to the 90th anniversary of the Sverdlovsk region.

In the collection of the UrFU Library you can find books about motorbikes, arrangement of motorbike engines, the history of the Irbit Motorcycle Plant, about motorcycling and motorbike tourism, etc.

You can check the availability of books using the Library Catalogue.
