March 21 is World Poetry Day, which was established in 1999 during the 30th General Conference of UNESCO in Paris. The main objectives of the Day are to promote linguistic diversity and support endangered languages through poetry, to call for the promotion of poetry, to return to the oral tradition of poetry readings, and to restore dialog between poetry and other art forms.

The word “poetry” comes from the Greek poieo - to create, to make, to build. The ancient Greeks meant by poetry human speech in all its manifestations. It is believed that the oldest poems-hymns were created in the 23rd century BC. The author of the poems was the priestess Enheduanna, daughter of the Akkadian king Sargon, the ruler of Mesopotamia (the territory of modern Iran). Enheduanna wrote about the moon god Nanna and his daughter, the goddess of the morning star Inanna. Her texts were considered sacred and were found and deciphered in the XX century.

Nowadays, on this Day all over the world - in cultural and educational institutions, creative groups, etc. - various poetry concerts, author's readings, conferences and seminars dedicated to poets and their work, presentations of new poetry literature, and awarding of literary prizes take place. For example, in Russia, the National Literary Awards “Poet of the Year” and “Writer of the Year”, established by the Russian Union of Writers, are timed to coincide with World Poetry Day.

The University Library has a large selection of books by Russian and foreign authors, masters of the poetic word, who have made an invaluable contribution to world literature. You can check the availability of books on circulation desks, in reading rooms and in information centers with the help of the Library Catalogue.
