80 years ago the Great Patriotic War was ended, the most terrible in the history of mankind. Representatives of many occupations brought the Victory Day closer, not only on the front lines. It is asserted that wars are won not only by soldiers, but also by science, technology, behind which stands the serious work of hundreds of specialists – design engineers, physicists, chemists, metallurgists, biologists. Without victories on the scientific front, there would be no victories on the battle field.
Historically, in the war years leading scientists from all over the country came to Sverdlovsk. Some of them went to the front, some fought in the rear, saving thousands of human lives with their inventions. And there are also those who, having gone through the front roads, returned to the scientific field. Among them – Hero of the Soviet Union, participant of the 1945 Moscow Victory Parade, founder of the Department of Theoretical Fundamentals of Heat Engineering at Ural Polytechnic Institute and the scientific school of heat power engineering, Nikolai Ivanovich Syromyatnikov.
Despite many students and teachers leaving to the front, the Ural Industrial Institute continued to work, solving not only educational but also academic problems. Scientific research, discoveries of professors and students of the institute made an invaluable contribution to the successful ending the war. It should be highlighted that the institute activities did not stop: lessons were held, dissertations were defended, the library collection was expanded with new items, the institute also published its own scientific works.
The exhibition in the Library Resources Information Center (19 Mira St., room Б-202) is devoted to a number of the outstanding Institute scientists and their scientific feat. Of course, it is impossible to tell about all the heroes of the home front. You can learn more about them and their achievements by reading publications from the Library collection, whereas the periodicals from the UrFU Electronic Scientific Repository will help you to jump to those distant war years and feel like a participant in historical events.
Stories about these scientists will be posted in VK «Accessible science» («Доступная наука») group.
Library expresses gratitude to Professor of Heat Power Engineering Department, V N. Korolyov for excursion to the department and laboratory founded by N. I. Syromyatnikov.
Eternal memory to the heroes of the scientific front!
