In 2025, the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ural Federal University celebrates its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1965 as a branch of the Faculty of History of the Ural State University, it became the fourth centre for the study of philosophy in the USSR, a forge of personnel for Siberia and the Far East. During this time, it has trained many outstanding specialists who have contributed to world and national science.

A significant role in the development of the faculty was played by Professor Mikhail Nikolayevich Rutkevich, who was the first dean until 1972. He initiated the creation of the department and its transformation into a separate faculty. Thanks to his efforts, a team of teachers was formed, new departments and postgraduate studies were opened, and links with scientific centres of the country were established. Mikhail Rutkevich created a school of Ural philosophers and sociologists that included Harold Zborovsky, Vladimir Kim, Isaac Loifman, Daniil Pivovarov, and others. They continued the traditions and made the Ural philosophical school one of the leading ones in Russia.

The contribution of Professor Alexander Vladimirovich Pertsev, who headed the faculty for almost 20 years, is worthy of special mention. His works covered the main problems of foreign philosophy of the 19th-20th centuries, the history of political ideas; he translated from German about 200 scientific works by foreign scholars.

The Liberal Arts & Humanities Circulation Desk (4 Turgeneva Street, Room 252) presents a book, from which readers can learn more about the history of the Faculty – it is the work of Boris Emelyanov and Vasily Rusakov ‘Ural Philosophical School: 1965-2005’. Milestones of biographies of teachers and researchers of the faculty are presented in ‘Sketches of the History of the Ural University’ edited by Boris Kolesnikov, ‘Ural State University in Biographies’ edited by Alexey Podchinenov. You can check the availability of books in the Library Catalogue.
