Physical education had been gradually implemented in higher educational institutions of the USSR since July 1929. Work with students was based on the GTO Standard and the Uni-fied Sports Classification of the Soviet Union. In 1934 our university was ready to found the Chair of Physical Education and Sports. In 1989 USTU became the first technical university in the USSR to establish a Faculty of Physical Culture on the basis of this chair. In 2004 the faculty was transformed into the Institute of Physical Culture, Social Management and Tourism.

Over the years of its existence the institute has provided more than 2 thousand alumni with qualifications and diplomas, including

Sergei Tchepikov (two-time Olympic champion in biathlon);
Konstantin Tszyu (two-time European champion; world all-round champion in profes-sional boxing);
Irina Khabarova (world champion, silver medallist at the Olympic Games in athletics);
Geidar Mamedaliyev (world champion, silver medallist at the Olympic Games in Graeco-Roman wrestling);
Nadezhda Chemezova (world champion, World Swimming Championship medallist);
Zosia Podgorbunskikh (Climbing World Cup champion);
Nikolay Pankratov and Ivan Alypov (FIS Nordic World Ski champions);
Anton Shipulin (Honoured Master of Sports, the Olympic Games champion, Biathlon World Championship medallist);
Galina Likhachova (bronze medallist at the Olympic Games in speed skating).

Nowadays The Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Policy of the Ural Federal University is represented by 5 chairs. The staff entail 13 Doctors of Sciences, 21 Professor, 65 PhD holders. Many faculty members have been awarded such titles as Master of Sports, Master of Sports of International Class, Honoured Master of Sports, Honoured Coach of the Russian Federation. The Institute has the best sports centre among the universities of our region. It pro-vides our students with opportunities to make progress in over 30 training programmes.

Impressive, isn’t it? If you want to get a more detailed acquaintance with the Institute and its history, you can refer to the following books: “USTU-UPI : An Outline of History. 1920–2005” edited by Stanislav Stepanovcih Naboychenko, the legendary rector of USTU; and “Sci-entific Schools of the Ural State Technical University. The Past and the Present”. They can be borrowed at the circulation desk of Social & Economic Studies; be sure to check their availability via the library catalogue beforehand. You can also find full-text digital editions of these books in the Ural Federal University DSpace.
