Ural State University was established in the Urals on October 19, 1920. It incorporated a polytechnic institute with five faculties. In today’s article we focus on its Metallurgical Faculty.

The first cohort of 156 students began their studies in November 1920 under exceptional-ly harsh conditions. Facing a shortage of textbooks, metallurgy students backed by professors initiated a student publishing house. Using glass printing, they produced such seminal guides as “The Theory of Flame Furnaces” by V. E. Grum-Grzhimailo, “The Theory of Metalurgical Pro-cesses” by I. A. Sokolov, “Hydraulics” by V. A. Karyakin (a 1923 edition of which is held in the Rare Books Section of the UrFU Scientific Library), and “Crystallography” by A. V. Shubnikov.

During the Great Patriotic War, the faculty’s laboratories became a "special frontline": the Chair of Metallurgy aided the Nizhny Tagil Plant in smelting specialty steels, while the Chair of Foundry developed ammunition technologies at the Serov Plant. The faculty’s breakthroughs in aluminum, copper, cobalt, and nickel production contributed directly to the struggle against fas-cism.

In 2016, the Metallurgical Institute became a Department of the Institute of New Materi-als and Technologies. Today it is represented by 12 chairs training specialists in ferrous/non-ferrous metallurgy, standardization, metalworking (including artistic metalworking), metallurgical IT, and industrial management.

Isn’t that interesting?
