The history of economic education at UrFU dates back to 1931 with the establishment of the Faculty of Industrial Economics at UPI under the leadership of German Prudensky, a PhD in Economics.

In 1936–1937, the departments of the faculty began conducting research aimed at the development of specific industries in the Urals. They were studying advanced labor methods, and other pressing economic issues. During this period, the first schedule of the department staff’s PhD theses defenses was planned, and in 1939 the first collection of the faculty’s research papers was published.

During the war years, the Faculty of Industrial Economics employed evacuated academic staff from Moscow and Leningrad universities, including Doctor of Economics Sergei Tatur and professors Mihail Olenev, Ippolit Razumov, and Lev Agre, who played a significant role in training engineering and economic specialists in the Urals.

If you want to learn about the development of economics in the Urals from 1935 to 2005, you can refer to Yuri Zinoviev’s book «History of the Faculty of Economics and Management at USTU-UPI», which compiles historical essays and personal recollections of the era, key figures, and pivotal research.

In 1960 the Faculty of Economics at USU that started with a single department, the Department of Political Economy, grew into a full-fledged institution. In 1967 the Sverdlovsk Institute of National Economy ( = Sverdlovskij institut narodnogo khozyajstva, SINKh, now Ural State University of Economics) was established on its basis. The faculty implemented a model of classical economic education with thorough training in humanities, a substantial set of fundamental and applied mathematical disciplines, and in-depth knowledge of mathematical theory.

Since 2008 the faculty has been running a pioneering joint bachelor’s degree program (a double-degree program) in Russia. It is offered by USU and the country’s leading economic university – the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE, Moscow).

These and other «Pages from the History of the Faculty of Economics at USU, 1983–2008» are covered in an anniversary collection edited by Sergey Kadochnikov.

In 2010, the Faculty of Economics at USU and the Faculty of Economics and Management at UPI merged to form the Graduate School of Economics and Management (GSEM) at UrFU. Sergey Kadochnikov, Doctor of Economics, became the dean of the unified Faculty of Economics. Under his leadership, a new model of economic education was developed in 2014. The model combines the traditions of both schools. Since 2015 the peer-reviewed scientific journal has been published under the editorship of Igor Mayburov, Doctor of Economics and professor. It is entitled «Journal of Tax Reform» and dedicated to issues of tax reform and financial policy

In 2019, HSEM UrFU was reorganized into the Institute of Economics and Management (IEM), led by Dmitry Tolmachyov, a PhD in Economics, an expert in regional economics and former director of HSEM.

From this point onward, history gives way to the present day. All the mentioned sources can be accessed at the UrFU library after checking their availability in the electronic catalog or via the university’s full-text digital archive.
