The Philological Faculty of the Ural Federal University is one of the largest centers for training qualified philologists in the Urals and Siberia. Its rich history includes decades of active participation in the development of domestic humanitarian education. The Philological Faculty was founded in 1940 at the Ural State University. The organization of the new division was carried out by the famous linguist Ivan Alekseevich Dergachev. It was thanks to his initiatives and leadership that the faculty gained authority and fame in the scientific community of the region. I. A. Dergachev actively contributed to the development of research areas related to the study of the Russian language and regional dialectology. An important role was also given to the study of classical Russian literature, especially the work of writers of the 19th-20th centuries. In addition, Ivan Alekseevich organized scientific conferences at the faculty, where P. P. Bazhov was a frequent guest. Over time, the Russian language department expanded its influence, and new research areas emerged. For example, special attention was paid to the study of local dialects and folk speech, reflecting the cultural diversity of the population of the Middle Urals. The department's teachers developed unique methods of teaching the native language, emphasizing the connection between the language and culture of the region. The Department of Foreign Languages, which was formed a little later, also made a significant contribution to the educational process. The study of English, German and French was organized, which made it possible to prepare future teachers and researchers of international level. The faculty also conducted serious research in classical philology. For example, Dergachev studied the work of D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak (he published more than 40 works), and discovered several undeservedly forgotten names of fellow countrymen writers. In memory of I. A. Dergachev, the All-Russian scientific conference "Dergachev Readings" is held in Yekaterinburg every two years.
During the Great Patriotic War, the activities of the Philological Faculty underwent significant changes caused by the harsh conditions of wartime. One of the main challenges was the university's move from Sverdlovsk to Perm, where teachers and students were temporarily housed in the building of the local university. This event greatly affected the educational process, but classes continued despite everything.
Today, a student of the Faculty of Philology has the opportunity to study modern information resources in depth, master new methods of text analysis and processing large amounts of information. The Liberal Arts & Humanities Circulation Desk includes several publications by I. A. Dergachev: “Fundamentals of Metal Science: Abstract: Manual for Students of Universities” (1931), “Books and Fates. Pages of the Literary Life of the Urals” (1973), as well as collections published under his editorship, for example, “Russian Literature of the 1870s–1890s”. You can check the availability of books in library catalogue or use UrFU Electronic repositorу. Author and translator: Angelina Cherenkova
