About Oxford University Press

In the 16th century a printed book replaced manuscripts, after which the University of Oxford founded Oxford University Press. However, the first printer associated with the University was Theodoric Rood. He came to Oxford from Cologne, Germany. The first book was published in 1478. It was a church book and, though no printer’s name was in the book, it has been traditionally attributed to Theodoric Rood.

Initially Oxford University Press printed ancient manuscripts, theological tractates, and prayer books. In early 19th century OUP got Bible printing privilege. The printed output also included textbooks for students. In the 20th century Oxford University Press changed its publishing area and took on the publication of reference books.

“The Oxford English Dictionary” became the trademark of OUP. It was initiated by James Murray, a philologist of Scotland, in 1857 after the pattern of The Deutsches Wörterbuch begun by the Brothers Grimm. The first part of the dictionary was published in 1884. Murray died and did not see the completion of his great project, just reaching the letter “T”. It took 16 years to publish all the volumes. The second edition was published in twenty volumes in 1989 bounding half a million entries. Since 2017 the Dictionary is under alteration and is now available only in electronic format. In 2019 the film “The Professor and the Madman” (in the Russian interpretation “The Games of Minds”) was released. It is a biographical film based on the story of compiling the dictionary.

Apart from dictionaries Oxford University Press makes available masterpieces of national literature, among them J. Milton, Ch. Dickens, J. Austen, W. Shakespeare; presents anthologies - «The Oxford Book of English Verse», «The Oxford Book of Irish Short Stories», «The Oxford Book of Humorous Prose»; publishes books in history, philosophy, law and other subject areas.
