About Oxford University Press
Books published by Oxford University Press (Circulation Desk of Foreign Literature, 4 Turgeneva Street, Room 356).
In the 16th century a printed book replaced manuscripts, after which the University of Oxford founded Oxford University Press. However, the first printer associated with the University was Theodoric Rood. He came to Oxford from Cologne, Germany. The first book was published in 1478. It was a church book and, though no printer’s name was in the book, it has been traditionally attributed to Theodoric Rood. Initially Oxford University Press printed ancient manuscripts, theological tractates, and prayer books. In early 19th century OUP got Bible printing privilege. The printed output also included textbooks for students. In the 20th century Oxford University Press changed its publishing area and took on the publication of reference books. |
