Lesson 4. Information and Document

Pay attention that any information fixed on a tangible medium is treated as documented information, i.e. a document.

Federal Law “On the legal deposit” offers the following denotation of a document:
— it is a tangible medium;
— it fixes information in form of a text, sound recording (phonogram), images or their combinations;
— it has details allowing to identify it;

— it is intended for information transfer through time and space for the purpose of public usage and storage [3].

Document identification by details allows determining the author (creator, compiler) or executor. This displays one of a document’s properties — a document can not appear by itself, it is man-made. Naturally, a document reflects a certain content, sense of information. Thus, it may be concluded that information can exist without a document, but a document can not exist without information.

TO SUMMARISE, information fixed in a document is the base of information resource (Figure 1).

Information is transferred to knowledge through its understanding by means of perception, extraction of meaning and creation of personal meaning [1]. Personal base of knowledge is formed on the basis of the information, data included into documents and reflected in information resources (see Figure 2).

The ultimate goal of the process of search for information is to find a document in information resource and get an answer to your query. In the following lesson the kinds of documents will be considered.
