Lesson 13. Retrieval Types
Being formulated, informational query puts into words our information need. However, the problem is how should we effectively obtain relevant to our needs results?
It should be noted, that there are specific retrieving models that will facilitate making query on the basis of the data we have. Below follows overview of the models.
Address search is made when we know an author or a title of a document, when we need a certain document, information on availability / place, and exact storing address of a source. In this case search attributes are the names of an author, editor, affiliation, title of a source or a part of the source.
Thematic (semantic) search is necessary when we need documents in specific theme, object, problem, subject area; about a person, affiliation, geographical object, etc. In this case we use keywords for retrieving.
Factual search is used when we need information on a specific fact, data on a certain object, process, event, etc. The result of a factual search is not a document or a list of documents, but an answer to the question.
It should be noted, that in practice one retrieving model is often supplemented by another in dependence on a researcher’s interest.
Algorithm of each retrieval model type will be treated in the following lessons.
