The Circulation Desk of Foreign Literature (4 Turgeneva St., auditorium 356) welcomes readers to the exhibition The Art of Deception: Photography.

In the contemporary world due to continuous technical progress the possibilities of art also evolve. The mastery of photography is rightfully considered one of the most common types of art creation. Photography gives us the opportunity to capture the emotions and feelings in the moment.

The word “photography” comes from the ancient greek φῶς “light” and γράφω “drawing” which together means “drawing with light”. For a long time, the Russian Empire used that exact translation. The process of inventing photography took several centuries: in the 5th century BC ancient Chinese philosopher Mozi made a description of the camera obscura. However, 1839 is considered to be the year of invention of modern photography. The first working photography technology was created during that time in Paris. It was called daguerreotype. Based on his own research and the previous experiments of Nicéphore Niépce, the Frenchman Louis Daguerre was able to take a picture of a person and get a stable photo.

The books concerning the history of the development of photography are on display. Readers can get acquainted with the works of the major photographers of the 20th century from North America and Europe, Japan and Latin America, Africa and China. Cat lovers will be fascinated with the book by Hans Silvester “Cats in the Sun”. The photos feature happy and charming cats on the background of enchanting Greek Islands.

The exhibition will last until the 1st of September of 2023.
